Endoscopy services at Royal Cornwall

In 2018, Royal Cornwall Hospital faced significant challenges in meeting its endoscopy targets. This was primarily due to workforce issues and a three-year backlog. The Trust urgently needed a solution to reduce waiting times and address the shortage of substantive consultants.

The Medical and Diagnostic Care Group (MDCare) provided comprehensive endoscopy insourcing services across multiple sites. The initial contract period was just 12 months, but after a massive success in service delivery, we have been working with Royal Cornwall ever since.

So, how did we do it?

We structured our first year of service to make an immediate and sustainable impact. We ensured that services ran smoothly and efficiently by providing a comprehensive endoscopy team, including consultants, nurses, coordinators, and decontamination technicians.

Over our first year of partnership with Royal Cornwall, we achieved the following:

Based on these achievements, the Trust recognised the benefits of the MDCare approach and has extended the contract year after year, allowing us to sustain long-term transformation to the endoscopy services in the southwest. Since 2018, our team has been exceeding national standards and delivering consistent, quality care, maintaining a D2 intubation rate above 95% and improving bowel prep success from 80% to 92%.

We’re very proud to have supported the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust since 2018 and ensured patients get the care they need when they need it.
