Dermatology Minor Ops Insourcing at Royal Cornwall NHS Foundation Trust

Due to the pandemic, Royal Cornwall Hospital faced a backlog of over 600 dermatology minor ops cases in 2023. The Trust needed an urgent solution to reduce waiting times and restore service capacity.

MDCare was contracted to provide minor ops theatre capacity, initially for three months, later extended based on performance. This service delivery included staffing, schedule management and procedures completed every weekend across two day-case theatres.

MDCare provided a comprehensive team of specialists, including

  • Two Plastic Surgeons
  • One Surgical Team Leader
  • Four Minor Ops Nurses
  • Two Minor Ops Healthcare Assistants (HCAs)

For us quality of staff is always a priority. To guarantee quality assurance:

  • Plastic surgeons underwent rigorous reference checks from clinical leads and provided surgical logbooks demonstrating relevant procedural experience.
  • Surgical Team Leader required to be Band 6 or above with a minimum of 2 years NHS experience.
  • All nursing staff (Band 5) and HCAs (Band 3) reference-checked to confirm NHS employment and experience in minor ops procedures.
