In 2017, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, part of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, faced a growing challenge.
Like many Trusts, the endoscopy service was under pressure, struggling with a large backlog of surveillance patients and increasing waiting times. The hospital needed extra capacity, quickly and reliably, to bring the service back on track.
Here’s what we did to help…
Delivering tailored capacity, not just extra staff
We provided a fully managed weekend endoscopy service, operating six endoscopy rooms every Saturday and Sunday. This arrangement allowed the Trust to continue meeting weekday demand while addressing the surveillance backlog.
We deployed:
-
JAG-accredited consultants with a minimum of two years’ post-CCT NHS experience
-
Experienced endoscopy nurses (Band 5 or above)
-
Endoscopy coordinators (Band 6 or above)
-
Decontamination technicians trained in Olympus scopes

What started as a 12-month contract was renewed multiple times over seven years, reflecting the trust Cambridge placed in our service and people.
At MDCG, our mission is to help NHS Trusts like Cambridge improve access, reduce wait times, and maintain the highest standards of care — without adding pressure to existing teams.
If your Trust is facing similar challenges, we’d love to talk.
